Everyone gets split ends…. On some lucky people they happen very slowly and for others they are a normal occurrence. There is no “fix” for split ends. Once they are there, the only way to get rid of them is to cut them off. There are products that can camouflage them but I do not recommend that. They need to be snipped off and here’s why…
A split end can start for many reasons. Too much heat and rough treatment can be one cause. Age and genetics is another. Even healthy hair will get split ends, though not as frequently as unhealthy hair. Once it starts, it continues to “grow” up the shaft of the hair until its at your scalp and then there’s nothing you can do about it. (Have you ever found a split end and pulled it apart? That’s what naturally happens to a split end over time.) Ideally, you want to cut that split end off before it starts to creep up. That’s why regular trims are essential! And if you wait until you have 2 inches of split ends and come in and tell your stylist to cut off one inch, guess what? You are leaving the salon with one inch of split ends that is going to continue to grow….What’s the point? Let your stylist decide how much should come off. And if you are a once a year kind of person, don’t be shocked when you’re told you need 3 or 4 inches off. If your hair is in bad shape. bite the bullet and get what is needed cut off and then let your stylist tell you how often you need to come in to stay on top of it. Yes, Ladies, it is possible to grow your hair out while still getting regular trims. Hair typically grows 1/2 inch a month. If you come in every 8 weeks for 1/4 inch off, you are still 3/4’s of an inch ahead. The healthier the hair, the longer you can go in between cuts. Think about it…Why have long hair if it doesn’t look healthy?
